Industrial Design Process

Gustav Jansson

My research question is about “How the design process for timber housing manufactures can be more effective with information methods and tools”. Working with industrial partners in the building management gives the opportunity to get update information and knowledge about different building systems. Data and experience for my research is just two of the advantage to work with industrial partners. Lindbäcks, who is my partner, is a house manufacture company that has develop their building system since 1994 together with our division at Luleå University of Technology.

The design process can be described in many ways. The design process for industrial timber housing can be visualized as a train loop were most activities can be separated from the track and just some activities is connected “on” the train as project related activities. The ratio between companies varieties in project and process based work. The industrial housing gives opportunity to standardize the whole building system, and can maybe be split up in a resolution were activities and objects can be sorted into project- and process related categories for the volumes.

With support methods and system for the project leaders and standardized CAD models can the industry be more effective and will give more room for quality work and can use more knowledge from previous projects. Receptivity and standardized solutions for the building system is some other efficiency's that my result gave from the mapping of the design process at Lindbäcks.

It was very interesting to hear you talk about you hoped to incorporate parametrics to your modular house building programs. I like that you can see it as a method of standardization that does not achieve efficiency through repetition but by mass customization. For your project, it will be very interesting to see which elements of the design process you find lend themselves best towards parameterization and see whether you find some that do not lend themselves as readily to parametrization. Either way I will be keeping an eye on this to see how it develops and try to give you helpful feedback if I can (I hope you will do the same).

I think this is a very efficent way to work as it describes the product development process as well as it aids the engineers in there work by describing what should be done at which time and in which order. (And maybe by which role..) We have a similar process description at Volvo Aero, the “Global development process”
